Overview

What is spinal fusion?

Spinal fusion is a procedure that stabilises two or more vertebrae by encouraging them to heal together. Screws, rods, cages and bone graft may be used to treat instability, deformity or selected degenerative spine conditions.

Who May Need It?

When is fusion considered?

  • Spondylolisthesis with instability.
  • Spinal deformity.
  • Selected recurrent disc disease.
  • Severe spinal stenosis with instability.
  • Spinal fracture requiring stabilisation.
  • Revision spine surgery.
Diagnosis

How is fusion need assessed?

MRI, CT and dynamic X-rays may be used to determine instability, nerve compression and anatomy. Fusion should be recommended only when the structural problem matches the patient's symptoms.

Fusion Techniques

Common spinal fusion approaches

TLIF

Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion using screws and a cage.

PLIF

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion through a posterior approach.

ALIF

Anterior lumbar interbody fusion through an abdominal approach in selected patients.

Cervical Fusion

Fusion used in selected cervical disc or instability cases.

How Surgery Is Done

Your fusion journey

01
Decompression

Nerves are decompressed if required.

02
Disc / joint preparation

The fusion area is prepared for bone healing.

03
Implants

Screws, rods and cages are positioned as required.

04
Bone graft

Bone graft is placed to promote fusion.

Recovery

Recovery after spinal fusion

Walking usually begins early, but bone fusion takes months. Return to heavy work is slower than after simple decompression or microdiscectomy.

Possible Risks

What risks should patients understand?

Possible complications include infection, bleeding, nerve injury, non-union, implant failure, adjacent-level degeneration, blood clots and need for revision surgery.
