Dialysis Access Surgery in Ranchi
Creation and maintenance of reliable haemodialysis access, including AV fistula, AV graft and access revision for patients with advanced kidney disease.
What is dialysis access surgery?
Dialysis access surgery creates or maintains a reliable blood-flow access for haemodialysis. The preferred long-term option is often an arteriovenous fistula (AV fistula), where an artery and vein are surgically connected.
When is dialysis access planned?
- Advanced chronic kidney disease expected to need haemodialysis.
- Patients already on dialysis using a temporary catheter.
- Failed or poorly functioning previous AV fistula.
- Need for AV graft when suitable veins are unavailable.
- Access-related swelling, thrombosis or poor flow requiring revision.
Common dialysis access options
Native artery-to-vein connection and commonly preferred for long-term dialysis.
Synthetic conduit connecting artery and vein when native veins are unsuitable.
Temporary or semi-permanent access used when immediate dialysis is needed.
Planning before surgery
Clinical examination and Doppler ultrasound may be used to assess vein size, arterial flow and the most suitable site for fistula creation.
AV fistula creation
Usually local or regional anaesthesia depending on site and patient factors.
An artery and vein are identified.
The vein is surgically joined to the artery to create high blood flow.
The surgeon confirms thrill and blood flow before closure.
When can an AV fistula be used?
An AV fistula usually needs time to enlarge and strengthen before routine dialysis cannulation. The maturation period varies and should be assessed clinically or by Doppler when needed.
Protecting your dialysis access
- Check for the vibration or “thrill” daily.
- Avoid blood pressure measurements on the fistula arm.
- Avoid tight clothing or prolonged pressure over the access.
- Report sudden loss of thrill, swelling, pain or bleeding.
- Maintain skin hygiene before dialysis.
What complications can occur?
Possible complications include bleeding, infection, thrombosis, poor maturation, venous narrowing, arm swelling, steal syndrome and aneurysmal change in the access.
Dialysis access surgery cost
Cost varies by AV fistula versus graft, Doppler mapping, anaesthesia, revision surgery and hospital stay.

Frequently asked questions
A well-functioning native AV fistula generally has good long-term durability and lower infection risk than a catheter.
